Making world a beautiful place with seed paper
Give your child an amazing experience the wonder of nature by. A plant has many ways to spread its numbers. This is a simple hack on how we as humans can make the world green.
Seed paper, what is it?
It's simply paper you can make at home with plant seeds inside it. The seeds could be flower seeds, seeds of different herbs, or even seeds of spices. The seed paper is totally biodegradable. You can bury it in soil in a pot or in the garden. In a short time you'll notice the plants sprout & the paper which helped the seed to become a plant is gone.
What would you need to make seed paper?
Simply what you need are few house hold items
We need Seeds
Yes, that's the most important ingredient. Coz, we are making seed paper. When you are choosing seeds make sure that you always use non-invasive, zero or low maintenance plants. The size of the seeds matter too. If the seeds are too thick, large or heavy then it'll not fit in here as you might also want to write a greeting or draw something. Seeds like beans, olives don't fit in. So make sure the seeds are tiny & have a high germination rate to obtain success.
If you live in a country like Sri Lanka where biodiversity is so high, you can use seeds like marigold, mustard, kurakkan (a tiny grain just like mustard.), chilli Pepper etc.
Any type of paper
can use any type of paper. Make sure the paper is free of any plastic tape or pins.
Handmade paper frame
This could be made with a cloth or mesh fixed to a square shaped wooden frame.
Blender
Use an old blender or you can buy a used one from a store. Make sure that this blender should never be used in your kitchen.
A container
A container larger than the handmade paper frame. This could be a basin, the kitchen sink with a stopper.
Old towels
Use one or two towels to absorb water from the paper.
Now let's make seed paper in few simple steps
Having collected the required items now you can make your own seed paper.
1. Soak Paper
Shred paper into small strips & soak the paper overnight. Use warm water for great results.
2. Preparation of paper pulp
Blend soaked water with adequate water & make a smooth paste. Make sure that the paste is finely combined & thick. Pour the paste into the large container, add more water, seeds & stir well.
3. Collect pulp
Collect the paper soup to the paper frame carefully when the frame is evenly covered with pulpy water. Drain water as much as possible. You will now see the bottom of the frame covered with a layer of pulp.
4. Remove the paper from the frame
Line the towel evenly on a table or a wooden sheet. Place the tray on top of it. Then cover the frame with another tower or the same towel & press to absorb the moisture carefully. When the majority of water is absorbed you can transform the layer of seed paper onto the towel. Let it dry for at least 24 hours.
5. Create your own seed paper products
Within 24 hours the seed paper is totally dry. Now you can cut the paper into shapes of greeting cards, gift tags, invitations or other products. See below listed other options.
How to plant your seed paper
Rip the paper into small pieces if the paper is too large. This will speed up the paper decompose process & germination of seeds. In a pot or on an empty bed filled with rich potting soil lay the seed paper pieces, water them & check them daily. You will see the seedlings starting to sprout.
Types of seed paper
You can turn seed paper sheets into greeting cards, wedding invitations, birthday invitations, party invitations, gift tags, product tags, event tags, envelopes, bookmarks that your friends can recycle back into the earth.
